ILLITERACY

An illiterate person is that person who has not learnt to read and write. On the other hand a literate person is the one who can read and write. In many developing countries, like in Africa the illiteracy level has been found to be very high. This is particularly true in rural areas where the majority of people live

CAUSES OF ILLITERACY

  • Traditional and value system
  • Poverty
  • Wrong priority
  • Wrong attitude to education.
  • Poor and inadequate facilities materials
  • Lack of access to learning materials

CONSEQUENCES OF ILLITERACY

  • Ignorance, poverty and disease
  • Susceptibility to manipulation
  • Ethnic violence
  • Inhibition of technological development
  • Denials of rights and abuse of rights

EFFECT OF ILLITERACY

  • An illiterate person is an ignorant person, so he will behave in an animal way
  • Illiterate society will not develop at all.
  • An illiterate person does not have the ability to improve his own nation.
  • An illiterate person cannot benefit himself and his community.
  • An illiterate person may find himself in drug trafficking or drug abusing

SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM OF ILLITERACY

  • Adoption of enabling laws and policies
  • Provision of access road facilities.
  • Mass mobilization programs
  • Legalizing compulsory education
  • Government should provide good schools for free education
  • Government should encourage literate people
  • Provision of adequate facilities
